What is Google Shopping?

Before examining Shopping ads, it is important to note that it is NOT a form of advertising. Many traders and promoters still think of “Google Shopping” when thinking of ads on Google, however, this is no longer the situation.

Last year at the Google Marketing Live event, Google made it public that they had started the New Google Shopping Experience in the U.S. only. Google discontinued its original Google Express service and changed it to the new Google Shopping.

Google combined the advantages of Express (features like native checkout, easy re-ordering, and the fact that it was connected to a Google account) with its general product portfolio.

Retailers do not take advantage of Shopping ads to appear on the new Google Shopping Experience. They should turn on Shopping Actions within Merchant Center. These particular product listings do not bring buyers back to the store as all transactions are completed within Google Shopping, which is now called Buy on Google.

Previously, Shopping Actions or Buy on Google had a cost-per-sale setup, whereby retailers were required to pay a fee or commission to Google when a customer made a purchase, similar to a platform such as Amazon.

As of July 23, 2020, those who are new to Google’s program won’t have to pay any commission, but those already buying and selling should switch to the new model within a few weeks. Additionally, new merchants will have to wait to begin shopping on Actions for the time being.

In April 2020, Google declared a new Merchant Center program known as Surfaces across Google, which offers Free Product Listings in the United States.

The spread of COVID-19 combined with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic has caused the Shopping tab on Google to mainly consist of Free Product Listings, with some Shopping ads and Buy on Google outcomes scattered among them.

All of these free postings actually drive customers back to the online marketplace, and traders don’t have to pay a cost or any charge for each click for that website traffic.

The commencement of free or natural item postings on Google started in February 2019 and was improved once again in January 2020.
